When driving long distances we have many different strategies to pass the time and add interest to the day. One way to liven the journey is to make suggestions as to the origin of the place names we see along the way.
Some are self-explanatory:
Some require a little more imagination:
The Romans were here??
The explorer broke into his medicinal supplies when the road trip became too much for him…
Tara was being chased by something large and unpleasant…
This was where the explorer held his office party.
Someone lives down there – really?
It’s ten miles from somewhere…we don’t know where, it could be anywhere!
A pot of gold was found here…
As for this one, your guess is as good as ours! Any suggestions?
I love looking at the names of creeks when I’m travelling. We all know ‘ten mile creek’ is ten miles from ‘somewhere’, by ‘where’ no one ever knows. I always try to avoid stopping at places like ‘mosquito’ creek and ‘snake gully’ LOL 😀

I have photos of 6 mile creek and 4 mile creek too, but they weren’t near 10 mile creek. The one I really liked best was Murdering Hut Creek, but the photo was too blurry. I wouldn’t be stopping there if I could help it.

I’m glad you like my photos. I just thought some of these creek names were a little wacky and I’m always on the lookout for a fun story to post.

I love interesting road (or creek) names too. I like Scrubby Creek best. Can’t think of anything to describe the last sign – brain’s not working yet!

Haha I have never seen anything like this (can you tell I don’t get out much?). That will definitely be something to look for when traveling! Thanks for sharing!

You might find some really whacky ones!

We live in a delta area, but don’t have nearly THAT many creeks. Elbow Creek, Cottonwood Creek, Cross Creek, St. John’s River, Kaweah River, South Fork, Middle Fork, Mill Creek, just to name a few. None so colorful as Murdering Hut Creek! Yikes! 🙂

These photos were taken over a 200 km drive, so not that many really. I wonder what happened at Elbow Creek. Maybe the explorer hit his funny bone…

hahaha and we are still laughing. It could be that the creek has an elbow curve. Now I’m going to have to find out! 🙂

There are some great names for creeks, I have been noticing some funny things here, where the bridges get names, but you have no idea what they are going over.

Yes, we’ve seen that too.

Glad you enjoyed it. This could become a series, with all the unusual names we see on road trips.
