According to The Encyclopedia of the Nations, in 1996 Australia had 913,000 kilometres (567,338 miles) of roads. Of these, only 353,331 kilometres (219,559 miles) were paved. The rest were rural roads; gravel or dirt tracks connecting bush towns and farms, city to country.
Listen to the bellbirds on this isolated bush track near Tenterfield, New South Wales.
The pace is slower. The country scenery is superb. Enjoy the serenity.
Wow, Carol, that’s a lot of unpaved roads. I guess everyone there must own a 4WD? The Road to the Wall looks really rough, like some of what I drove on in Oman. I love the sounds of the bellbirds. 🙂

There are lots of 4WDs. We decided against going down the road to the Wall, because we were on our own and it just looked too risky. Aren’t the bellbirds lovely.

I’m not sure that the wooden bridge in the first photo looks totally safe! Is it a train track?

Yes it was a train track, but I’m not sure if it was still in use. It was very picturesque though.

Those bellbirds would make for a very peaceful afternoon, much nicer than traffic sounds!

They were so beautiful. We stayed there for ages.

I used to love ‘off-roading’ in the wadi’s in the UAE. Of course, we had the right car for the job. The roads usually looked like the road to The Wall, and worse. We were always getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. Never heard of a bellbird but they sound sweet and a bit spooky!

I’ve never seen a bellbird, but I’ve heard them often in forests like this.

That is spooky then!…

Aww, wonderful video, but I thought I was going to hear YOUR voice as well. The bellbirds sound beautiful, and I’ve never heard anything like them. The pictures of the roads are gorgeous. I love the snowy one, Walcroombit National Park and the railroad best. OK that’s most of them. Hard to pick which one is best! That’s what makes it such a great post. 🙂

My favourite is the snowy one.

Wonderful way to show the roads around the place, you just never know what sort of road you will find if you go off the main ones, I’ve found some interesting ones. Great post Carol.

Thanks Leanne. It’s fun to explore isn’t it.

You should do a post about them Leanne.

The problem is, is that I don’t tend to photograph them, maybe I should start, I am usually trying to navigate them with the car. 🙂
