When you’re greeted by a giant chef perched atop the building on the corner and a row of enormous teacups down the side of another, you know you’re in for a culinary treat in Kappabashi-dori. It’s not an edible indulgence this time but a shopping experience with a difference.
Kappabashi-dori, aka Kitchen Street, is at the centre of a district in central Tokyo where you can buy all sorts of kitchen accessories. From where the kitchen shops begin it’s impossible to see the end, with block after block of shop fronts decorated with bunting advertising their wares.
Some shops are large, with a variety of stock while others are tiny spaces packed to the rafters with just one type of implement.
Whether it’s chairs, chopsticks or chefs’ clothing you’re searching for, Kappabashi-dori is the place to go.
that gold teapot(?) and the little bowls were such a large part of my childhood! Whenever I got sick mama would make barley tea in that pot, and we had side dishes in the little bowls for ever single meal. So good ❤

I could have bought so many of those dear little bowls, but I resisted the temptation. I’m pleased to hear this story has brought back some happy memories.

Thanks. We could have window-shopped all day. All I bought though was a cookie cutter.

Thanks. There was so much to see and it was difficult to choose which photos to include here. I’m glad you enjoyed my selection Dena.

I could have spent a happy few hours (or more!) in a street like that. 🙂 I think the huge chef looks a little alarming though!

We were there for a few hours. I was talking to my sister last night and saying that as I was looking at the photos again I wondered why I didn’t buy some of those beautiful dishes. She reckons it’s because there was so much we didn’t know where to look in the end.

I think I would have been the same – sometimes I find that too much choice is overwhelming.

Ahh yes memories! I bought so many pieces from Japan. Some even survived the sea cargo trip and I still have them. They have such a delicate, distinctive hand with their designs.
