These tiny crabs, camouflaged on the white sand of Home Beach, leave nothing behind but their footprints. Who would have thought a such a delicate creature could leave this intricate pattern behind?

Argh! Crabs always remind me of spiders and I have just found an enormous brute in my bath tub!! Ok at least ours aren’t poisonous, but I cannot stand crabs or spiders – it’s the way they move I think.

At least you won’t find a crab in your bath tub! And a spider you can just whack with a shoe! It’s snakes I can’t deal with and we had a 2 metre long red bellied black snake at my school this week. It was sunning itself on a cement path. Thank goodness I didn’t see it and the men on staff dealt with it. They caught it and put it in a bin to be removed to a bush location out of town.

True. We don’t see many snakes here.

You are lucky. Actually I don’t see many either, but when there’s one around it gives me the creeps.

I shouldn’t ‘like’ your comment, but I know what you mean having lived in South Africa, where there were snakes.

Unlike Jude, I love crabs. We used to holiday at the coast when I was a kid and my brother and I would always roam through the rockpools and collect crabs. We’d keep them in a bucket with sand and rocks and seaweed for the week and then let them go when we went home.

I love watching how they scuttle across the sand and then stop perfectly still in the hope that you can’t see them. I can see this post has brought back fond memories for you and not so fond memories for Jude.

Crabs are such interesting creatures! I am fascinated by them. We once saw these crazy little patterns in the sand and were told that the crabs flipped the sand up!

Thanks. They were tiny crabs but moved very fast.

These are great photos! How did you manage to get so close to the crab without it scuttling off? 🙂

Elaine I have an amazing zoom on my camera so I stood a little away and zoomed right in on him.

I suppose that makes sense. I had a vision of you crouched down on the sand, nose to nose with him! 🙂

Elaine, that is hilarious. I don’t do animals, so I wouldn’t be getting anywhere near him.
