Holiday in Hawaii #8
I’ve never eaten fish tacos. I’ve eaten fish and I’ve eaten tacos, but never together. We had lunch at Leilani’s on the Beach and Marsha, Connie and Darrell all had fish tacos. They looked delicious.
I was tempted to stop at this Fish Taco Van, but it wasn’t the right time of day.
So when we had dinner at The Hula Grill in Lahaina I decided to try the Poke fish tacos. They sounded great on the menu – fresh ahi (tuna) served with shoyu, maui onions, chili flakes, avocado and wasabi aioli. When the tacos came to the table they looked very pretty.
It was only when I took my first mouthful that I realised the fish was raw! I didn’t know Poke meant raw!!
I ate two tacos but I couldn’t face any more raw tuna, so I removed it from the third taco and ate the rest. The avocado was excellent!
It was just as well I didn’t eat all my dinner because I needed room for dessert; an enormous serve of Hula Pie – crunchy chocolate crust and rich coconut ice cream, topped with chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup, toasted macadamias and a mountain of whipped cream.
It wasn’t difficult to eat all of my pie.
Now you see it…
Now you don’t…
What word would you use to describe my state of mind during this meal?

Marsha didn’t enjoy the Poke tacos either!
Not sure about the tacos. But the pie looks pretty good (minus all the cream). How did you feel afterwards?

We shared that serving of pie so it wasn’t as much as it looks! My mother has a favourite word which describes how I felt perfectly – I was replete!

I like that. My mother-in-law says “adequately sufficient!”

Another good saying.

I feel so bad about letting you down…not about the Poke, that was funny….but I completely forgot about malasadas. Connie and I should have picked up some for dessert.

It was funny and it makes a great story. What are malasadas? We will just have to go again to find out!!

I don’t mind raw fish – the kind that is marinated in lemon juice, so in a way it isn’t raw – but fish tacos I’m plain not sure about. The dessert minus the cream for me too – maybe a bit of yoghurt …. 🙂 Isn’t it great having your palate extended a bit though, even if its not that palatable……

Well, at least now I can say I’ve eaten Poke! I don’t know if yoghurt would go with the pie. The cream was good.

I have to say, tuna is probably my least favourite raw fish! I’m very impressed you ate two, and shall remember the word “poke” for the rest of my life!

I was hungry and I thought I should be adventurous and at least give it a go. If you visit Hawaii, you really need to know that word!

I shall remember that. Poke = Raw.

It’s one piece of trivia well worth remembering.

Denver fish tacos are pretty good, and cooked. The Hula Pie looks wonderful. Definitely would order that if I ever see it on a menu.

If I ever go to Denver I will be sure to try a fish taco. I would highly recommend the pie.

I’ve eaten and enjoyed fish tacos BUT it included cooked white fish. And, the dessert looks heavenly, and I think your state of mind would have matched that. 🙂

That’s a great word. It was divine!

I think your state of mind would be “contented”

More contented after dessert than after first course, that’s for sure.

I love fish tacos! And sushi although possibly not together!

I’m not keen on sushi and I have yet to taste a real fish taco. I’m sure it would be nicer than a poke taco.

We love fish tacos here! And thankfully most of them have been awesome, I don’t recall a bad one yet 😀

I will just have to return to Hawaii so I can try a real fish taco.

Don’t go poking me! I won’t enjoy it, Carol 🙂 Another lesson learnt, and not a bad reward.

You’ll just have to skip the main course and go straight to dessert, Jo!

HA! I have eaten some pretty good fish tacos…and tongue tacos. But raw fish…no way. I don’t even eat sushi. It’ raw! Don’t they know that?

I am yet to have a cooked fish taco and everyone has said how tasty they are. I’m not into sushi either. It’s raw and cold. Blaah.

I liked the fish tacos I had. But raw…no, it’s RAW.

I may have given the tacos a miss altogether, but not so much because of the raw tuna, but because they sounded a bit hot (chili flakes and wasabi ring warning bells in my head). The Hula Pie however is another matter, being made from of some of my most favourite ingredients – coconut ice cream, chocolate ice cream, macadamia nuts… Heaven. I think the words to describe your state of mind during this meal would be nervous then blissful. ,

We did ask about the chili and wasabi and were assured it was flavoursome but not hot. And that was correct. We forgot to ask about the poke! The hula pie was indeed heavenly.

That’s good to know that it wasn’t too hot. I’ve only had raw tuna, as sushi, and a little was enough!
