Garden Photography: July – The Edible Garden
I love the flavour of coconut – in cakes and cookies, macaroons and muffins and cool refreshing drinks.
This palm tree, laden with coconuts, leans out over the beach at Port Douglas in far north Queensland. If only I could grow one in my backyard!

I’m not a huge fan of coconut, although I don’t mind it as much now as I did as a kid when I loathed the desiccated stuff. But I do like fresh coconut, I use coconut milk in a chicken korma dish and I LOVE a piña colada 🙂 Nice photo ET (I also love Port Douglas…)

I have a very nice recipe for coconut cake. When you come to visit en route to the Whitsundays, I’ll bake it for you! 🙂

OK. Deal 🙂

I agree! Especially about having our own trees growing in our own back yards! Wouldn’t that be wonderful – and an unending supply of pina coladas! Cheers!! 🙂

We don’t have enough room and it’s not hot enough here, so I’ll just have to make do with all our citrus trees. We have an orange, lemonade, lime, lemon and mandarine and they are loaded with fruit. I’m juicing like mad every night – it’s a wonder we haven’t turned a pale orange colour. 🙂

That is very cool! I have a lemon tree in my tiny courtyard, doing its best to grow me a lemon or two 🙂

CC, if we were closer I would bring you a bucket of citrus…we have plenty to spare.

Love Port Douglas too, hubby’s enroute back from the top end as I type this. 🙂

Like Jude, I’m not a big fan of coconut, but thanks for reminding me of a piña colada! That’s one drink I haven’t had in ages, and I do like coconut in that. I also like the smell of coconut oil. Your photo is wonderfully enticing. 🙂

I use coconut oil in stir fries and curries. In this photo I like the way there are glimpses of the ocean and mountains beyond the tree. It was the most beautiful day.

I LOVE coconut! Cakes, biscuits, ice cream, drinks, sweets….
Did you know that coconuts are more dangerous than sharks?

Coconut lovers of the world unite! We were told when we were in Hawaii that more people are killed by falling coconuts than sharks and other dangerous animals. These coconuts weren’t up high, but imagine if you were hit on the head by one that fell from the top of one of the very tall palms. It wouldn’t be pleasant!

That same fact about coconuts and sharks was told to me at the London Aquarium when I was there on a visit with a school group several years ago. I once had a near miss with a falling coconut – it fell just as we had passed under the tree! Eek!

I’ve always wanted a coconut tree but my father-in-law won’t let me plant any on the farm. He says the coconuts drop off and hit people on the head (he’s such a kill joy) 😀

Well, that is true but perhaps you could put up a warning sign. Or even better, put a fence around it. I’m sure there’s a way around it.

We have them at the creek – but I wanted one near the house. One day….

Look on the bright side. You get the exercise of walking to the creek and you get to pick a coconut too. Just watch out for crocs while you’re down there.

On Bali, I have a guy who brings me a fresh coconut each morning…I love to drink the juice! I put the coconut in the fridge to get it cold. I need one now!

Yes please love Pina Coladas! What a beautiful tree – the coconuts falling would be a little dangerous though in your back yard 🙂

This is true. I would need to be vigilant about harvesting them regularly. Perhaps I will just stick with my bottle of Malibu!

I can completely understand that!

Wouldn’t it be fun to harvest your own coconuts.
