Western Queensland Road Trip – Square Tops Challenge #1
These top of the range household appliances would once have been the pride and joy of any housewife. Now on display at the Charleville Historic House Museum, they are a reminder of days gone by.
While our travels are on hold, I’m joining in every day with Becky’s April Square Tops Challenge over at The Life of B. The rules are simple: photos must be square and fit the theme word “top”.
Oh dear heaven – I’m antique! I had one of those beaters and one of those mincers – though in all fairness it was passed on to me by my aunt…… I’m thinking it would be jolly handy to have now!

You’re not the only one Pauline! My mother still has her original Sunbeam Mixmaster similar to the one in the photo. She’s had it for as long as I can remember and it’s still going strong. 🙂

It’s a shame that our shiny new appliances don’t have decorations like that sewing machine. My own model is totally white, boring!

Mine too! The old ones are much more attractive but they don’t have the fancy stitches.

LOL I can barely manage a straight seam, let alone fancy.

The beauty of modern machines is they do it all for you. You just have to turn it on! 🙂

‘Top of the Range’ I love the history and that i recognise so many items from my own childhood . . . . . .I was expecting a range of mountains 😀

Ha! Tricked you. 🙂 My mother and grandmother used many of these items.

Remember my Mum and Nan having all of those things and it doesn’t really seem that long ago.

My Mum still has some of these things and uses them. 🙂

And all still in perfect working order, Carol? Nice idea! Happy April to you 🙂 🙂

You know, I’d say many of these things would still work fine, especially the ones that don’t require electricity. They might need a scrub up and some TLC perhaps.

I’m always amused when I see ‘historical’ items and they are things I remember from my grandmother’s house (and in some cases my own childhood home!). My Gran had a sewing machine that looked very like that – same colouring and style, but it was a Singer one.

I wonder if our grandchildren will see items we use in museums. I’m thinking probably not so much because many things are made to be discarded these days.

How true about our ‘throwaway’ society, but maybe one or two people who find it hard to throw things away (myself included!) will be able to fill up the museums with our old laptops, old phones, digital kitchen scales etc.

What a great one to kick off with! Lots of those things I recognise from my childhood home – my mother had a mincer attachment for her Kenwood machine which was used to mince left over Sunday roast. Can’t afford a Sunday roast big enough to have leftovers nowadays!

Yes, my mother has a mincing attachment for her Sunbeam mixmaster. She used the mince the leftover roast and make fritters or shepherd’s pie.

Our appliances are made to expire …not like it was in the past.

This is true, although many of ours are still going strong. I hope I don’t jinx myself by saying that. 🙂

Great theme – and they don’t look too antique to me either! Except the irons, they do.

Imagine using one of those flat irons on those frilly long dresses. What a nightmare.

My mum used to have a sewing machine like that one. They don’t make things like they used to, that’s for sure!

True! It’s a sturdy piece.

Oh my. Many of those look familiar. Old age or good memory of childhood??
