Australian Landscapes #32
Destination: Lockhart, New South Wales
Unlike the silos at Thallon or the water tower in Cunnamulla, the painted water tower in Lockhart takes some effort to find. For a start, Lockhart isn’t on any major roads so you’ll need to make a detour. And, once you’ve arrived in this small Riverina town, you’ll still need to search because the water tower is almost hidden by the trees in the garden around it.
But it’s worth looking for!
Located on the main street, the water tower was painted in 2018 by two Blue Mountains artists using freehand techniques and spray cans. The mural they created pays tribute to one of Australia’s most important resources – water. It depicts a waterfall tumbling over a rocky cliff before flowing down to a creek on the forest floor, giving sustenance to the plants and animals native to this area.
If you’re on the road in the Riverina district, look out for the turn off to Lockhart. The extra kilometres will be forgotten when you do find the water tower!
This is so nicely done. The details are wonderful – it has a feeling of peace about it. And as it features my favourite colours I’d be delighted to find this 🙂

I can’t even begin to imagine how this was created with cans of spray paint. So clever. I love the colours too. Thanks Pauline.

So talented. I read that they did this work freehand, using photos on their phones for reference.

Yes, quite a special water tower. We only found out about it in a tourist brochure and decided to head off the highway to see it.

Would love to see more street art/murals around Oz.

I think there will be more and more over the next few years. It’s so popular and really gives a place character.

The detail in the paintings was quite beautiful. Such a nice way to decorate what is otherwise not a very attractive structure.

Awesome work. I especially like the galah as I used to have a little one as a pet. I am thinking it is easier to paint things on a larger scale, however, the surface, height and angle makes it an impressive effort. It adds interest to an otherwise grey landscape, doesn’t it?

These functional structures aren’t very attractive so painting them with beautiful local scenery and wildlife is a great decision. There seem to be more and more appearing too.

I love it when they paint on surfaces like silos and beautify ordinary objects 😀

I’m not sure I have the right adjectives to describe how much I like this or to applaud the artists who created it. It is truly amazing, and I do so appreciate you sharing it. Thank you.

There are more and more paintings appearing on silos and water towers all around Australia. They really make these functional buildings so beautiful. I’m glad you enjoyed seeing it today, Judy.

Yes. There was a lot more there but we were on a deadline so couldn’t stay any longer. It’s a place to remember for the future.

What an undertaking to paint the entire water tower! It is beautifully done. It would be fascinating to see the rigging or scaffolding the two artists used to create their masterpiece.

If you look at this post https://theeternaltraveller.wordpress.com/2019/11/10/larger-than-life/ there are photos of the artist working on the water tower in Cunnamulla. He’s standing in a cherry picker.

This is lovely, and to think it was created using spray cans is astonishing. It seems a shame that it is hidden out of the way and not so many people will see it.

Hopefully people read about it like we did and make the effort to go and visit.
