Kind Squares Photo Challenge #20 ~ Queensland: One of a Kind
Destination: Tallebudgera Creek, Gold Coast
Everyone knows seagulls will steal the food from your hand if given half a chance.
But along Tallebudgera Creek, a wily band of even more cunning marauders lurks, looking for any opportunity to help themselves. Australian brush turkeys, also called bush turkeys or scrub turkeys, live wild in the forest on Burleigh Headland. They’ve become familiar with the habits of humans and know that where there’s a picnic there’s likely to be a free meal.
The local seagulls aren’t deterred and happily join in, taking their lead from the turkeys. There’s some rowdy bickering, but everyone gets their share of the plunder.
When they’re discovered the turkeys make a quick getaway,
but the seagulls are bold as brass. They simply assume an innocent expression, all the while keeping an eye out for the next tasty treat.
This month I’m joining in every day with Becky’s October Kind Square Photo Challenge over at The Life of B. The rules are simple: most photos must be square and fit the theme word “kind”. Look for #kindasquare
All that to get sand in your sandwiches! Definitely enough to put me off beach picnics 🙂 🙂

We were very careful to not get sand in our lunch Jo. That was easier than keeping the birds at bay.

Oh goodness, Jo’s right. Beach picnics are definitely out. This is where Pommepal lives. If I ever make it over there I shall have to remember about the brush turkeys!

We did take our lunch but we held on to it, so no sand got in. You’ll find turkeys in most bush land in Queensland.

I saw them in a park in Dee Why. They make huge ‘nests’ at least I think that is what the mounds were.

Yes, they are nests and the males build the nests and do all the looking after of the eggs.

Yikes guess just have to be grateful they were not any crocs!!

This area is too far south for crocs thankfully. The turkeys might be aggressive but they won’t eat you. 😄

Turkey marauders…that is so funny, unless it was your picnic.

Luckily not ours, and it looked like the people had eaten and left the remains while they went for a paddle so not really a disaster. Just an annoyance when the birds spread everything everywhere. It was entertaining watching the birds bickering with each other.

Cheeky things – those poor people must have been so disappointed when they came back to their picnic.

It looked like they’d had their lunch and left the remains sitting in their takeaway boxes on their towels. Fair game for a band of hungry birds.

That’s a good way to describe their tactics – shock and awe. 🙂

Such naughty birds! The seagulls definitely look more innocent than the turkey picnic gobblers. Maybe that because they’re white and not black with red trim. 😅

Ha! You could be right about that. The turkeys were quick to clear out when they’d been caught red-handed but the seagulls just moved a few metres away. They’re definitely well-practiced at the art of food stealing.
