Iām joining Becky in her October Square Photo Challenge over at The Life of B. The rules of the challenge are simple: most photos must be square and fit the theme word Past. Look for #PastSquares. This month we’re travelling back in time in the western Queensland town of Miles and surrounds. We’ll explore the local area and join in the festivities at the Miles Back to the Bush Festival.
Miles Historical Village
The Main Event at the Back to the Bush Festival 2021 is underway on the arena behind the village. Before we join in, let’s take some time to explore the Historical Village.
The buildings on the main street date from the late 19th century. All are original to the Miles area and were relocated to the museum where they have been beautifully restored.
With the grocer, bakery and chemist all in a row, the shopping might be done in a flash…
leaving time for a visit to the local hotel!
looks terrific, I remember the days of the corner deli and a row of shops for all for your essentials, in the time before major shopping centres. š

It is a very nice little museum, Eunice. We spent a couple of hours wandering from shop to shop.

And inside they’re all fitted out with the appropriate goods. It’s quite fascinating to look at all the old things. Some will be appearing in the next couple of posts.

Well, I have a letter to post and I need some bread buns. Shame it’s so far away! Have a lovely weekend, Carol!

Thanks Jo. I hope you’re having a nice weekend too. Wouldn’t it be a treat to wander along this street and pick up all the things on your list.

It looks really lovely. I like the idea of all your needs being availble in a row of shops. š

Many small country towns, including Miles, still have all their shops on the main street like this. It’s nice to wander along and do some window shopping.

I think I would enjoy that. We still have High Streets here with shops all along them, but so often they are charity shops, or phone shops or shops selling things you wouldn’t need on a daily/weekly basis.

How delightful, looks like one of those towns you see in western movies! Some of the older towns in South Africa are very similar, with the one Main Road running through the centre.

Our towns would have been starting up at the same time as the ones depicted in American westerns. We have a very similar time line, mostly centred around gold rushes.

So much nicer than a supermarket! Imagine all the chatting and gossip that went on as people went in and out of the stores!

Yes, I’m sure everyone knew everyone else’s business. š

The town is spotless. Do they get many visitors?

In winter when the temperatures are more moderate hundreds of travellers pass through on their way north. The lady in the supermarket said this year’s festival attracted a record number of visitors. This photo is inside the museum though, not in the real town which is also very neat and tidy.
