I’m joining Becky in her October Square Photo Challenge over at The Life of B. The rules of the challenge are simple: most photos must be square and fit the theme word Past. Look for #PastSquares. This month we’re travelling back in time in the western Queensland town of Miles and surrounds. We’ll explore the local area and join in the festivities at the Miles Back to the Bush Festival.
Gurulmundi State Forest
We’re back where we started, joining the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt on his expedition in 1844.
L-Tree Creek is named for the markings left on some of the trees by the expedition party when they camped here. We looked for marked trees without success. We didn’t put in too much effort – it was a hot day and we didn’t want to walk through the bush and risk coming across a snake.
The explorer’s life is not for me!
Nor me, Carol. Intrepid is not my middle name! Happy Halloween!

I have my limits when it comes to adventures and explorations. 🙂

hee hee not for me either, specially if there are snakes around. I was woken up by a nightmare this morning, a huge snake attacking me!!

Oh, that would be terrifying. I wonder why we have dreams like that – not a good way to start your day.

Really wasn’t – even when I went to bed last night I had to remind myself there was no snake there!

Adventuring and exploring is all very well, but not if there’s a chance of coming across a snake! I’d be happy sticking to the well trodden path. 😀

Well, we didn’t see any snakes but I’m not keen on walking through long grass for no good reason. It was a hot day too, which is sure to bring them out.

Applause to our ancestors – they were tough, persistent and I’m grateful they paved the way.

Me too, because I wouldn’t want to do it. I’d have made a terrible farmer’s or explorer’s wife.

I’m glad you enjoyed coming along with me, Jude. We enjoyed our week in and around Miles too. We’ve driven through so many times over the years but never stopped and explored before.

Often the case. Like us and Wells.

OOOh I don’t think I’d be out exploring near the snakes. It looks pretty swampy.

It was quite wet around the creek but dry away from the water’s edge. We didn’t see any snakes, but I don’t like to go in long grass where there might be some, especially on a hot day.

Smart move. That’s all you need in your life – a snake bite! 🙂

Watching out for snakes is a very sensible thing to do! I don’t think I’d look too hard either 🙂

No, we didn’t want to go too far.

Don’t mind a bit of exploring but any chance of snakes puts me right off! Your country has a few dangerous surprises that you need to keep well away from.

This is true. Having said that, I’m 60 and I’ve only ever seen one snake in the bush in all the years I’ve been bushwalking and camping.
