Bougainvilleas might be tough, thorny plants but, when planted together, they create a stunning display. They are native to South America and flourish in warm climates. Tiny white flowers are surrounded by the clusters of brightly coloured leaf bracts for which the plants are best known. I found these beautiful bougainvilleas draped over a wall in Airlie Beach.

We’ve seen them in many different countries and I hadn’t thought about their origins either until I looked it up.

Nostalgic! We had the bougainvillea plants with multiple colors around our old house compound. Great photos!!!

They are such beautiful colours. I have a couple of scars from those darn thorns, though.

Yes, so does Mr ET. When we first moved to Darwin many years ago our home had three bougainvilleas which were growing on a trellis right across the front verandah. He gradually cut them all back to small bushes but it was dangerous work.

I didn’t realise that they were thorny but they are indeed very beautiful!

They have quite vicious thorns but their beauty makes up for that.

This is one of my favorite flowers. The exquisite colors always brighten my day and make me smile. V needs to plant some for me and walk me over to them when I get too grumpy. I can not stay grumpy around bougainvilleas. 🙂

Maybe we need to plant a whole lot more bougainvilleas in a whole lot more places if that’s the effect they have on people. But I can’t imagine you being grumpy.

I love bougainvillea! We can get them as houseplants here, but nothing beats them when they are growing outdoors in hot places.

They do tend to go a bit crazy if they’re not trimmed every now and then, but they make a wonderful display of colour.

They are so lovely, that I might forgive them a bit of craziness! 🙂

Welcome Janice and thanks for visiting. Thank you too for the compliment on my photos. Blogging has made such a difference to the way I think about photography. I have learned so much and take the time now to make sure I get the best photo I can. Not long ago a friend told me she can see a big difference between the photos on early posts and the ones I publish now. Carol.

In full bloom they are gorgeous, we have quite a lot in our garden as they survive the hot summers very well. I must take a photo when I’m back in Portugal (I’m in the UK for a few days cooling down!). Hope all is well with you 🙂 Cath

They are definitely hot climate plants. We will be in UK in a few weeks, visiting our daughter in Manchester.

Her two year visa is nearly at an end and she already has a working visa for Canada, so that’s her next destination. We are looking forward to our UK trip.
