The Ames Room at the Takao Trick Art Museum in Hachioji-shi creates an amazing optical illusion – we appear either gigantic or tiny depending on where we stand. It’s a clever play on perspective and I’ll leave it to Wikipedia to explain how an Ames room works.
That’s weird Carol. Interesting to read that it was used in Lord of the Rings.

Even when I look at the photos I can’t get my head around how we both look. We didn’t get the impression of the perspective while we were in there but when you look through the peephole at others it is the strangest sensation.

You’re sister Carol?? I’ve seen one of those before, I think the museum in Melbourne used to have one, they are so mind bending.

Yes, Leanne, this is my sister. We had a wonderful holiday in Tokyo. It helps that she speaks fluent Japanese!

Oh that’s terrific – I have to visit it! I saw the idea many years ago on a TV series where the baddies gave the two heroes mind-altering drugs and then put them in one of these rooms.

David, this museum was on the outer edge of Tokyo at the foot of Mt Takao. We visited on the same day we walked to the top of the mountain. https://theeternaltraveller.wordpress.com/2015/02/02/unusual-unexpected-unbelievable/

My eyes are confused! 🙂
I’m glad of the Wikipedia link, so that I can understand how it works – it is very clever.

It was very confusing. My brain was telling me one thing and my eyes another…

I imagine being in it would have been total confusion!

I was somewhere like this once when I was little and never understood how it worked (and things rolled uphill as well.) Have to look this up. Thanks.

Even when I read the explanation I found it pretty tricky. It’s a very clever illusion.

I haven’t seen them but I’m guessing they have big germs and little people??

It just goes to show, you can’t believe everything you see. 🙂 The illusion is lost though the moment the man in the video starts walking. Still a mind bender though!

I bet this trick is used all the time on television shows.

We have a site in Oregon, a “vortex,” where balls roll uphill, et cetera, but nothing like this. I know one thing, my “shorter” brother would love to take me here!

I know what you mean, it’s a long time since I was taller than my sister!

There is one of these rooms in Questicon, the science museum in Canberra and even when you actually see it for real it is hard to believe your eyes. Excellent choice for this challenge

Have you been to Canberra?

Yes, several times over the years, most recently in January 2014 for just a couple of days to visit friends. I wrote a couple of posts. I have yet to go to Questacon. Our daughters both went while on school trips and they really enjoyed it.

So now you’ve read it, do you understand how it works? It’s very confusing and tricky. I can tell you, when I was in there, the room looked square to me. And yes, we were both in the same room. Weird, hey!
