As part of Becky’s April Bright Square Photo Challenge over at The Life of B, I’ve opened the archives to January 2020 to share our 19 day trip to USA. Join me on a pictorial travelogue of the best and brightest of our pre-pandemic adventures in California and Nevada! The rules of the challenge are simple: most photos must be square and fit the theme word bright. Look for #brightsquare.
From November to February, thousands of orange Monarch butterflies gather in a sheltered grove at Pismo Beach on the Central California coast. They’ve travelled up to 2,000 miles, from as far north as Canada, to see out the winter.
We watched for ages as the brightly coloured butterflies clustered in the tall eucalypts and Monterey cypress trees, only leaving to feed on nectar from nearby flowering plants.
Aren’t they fabulous! That must be a sight 🙂 🙂

Thank you. The butterflies were very cooperative, staying still for long enough to get some nice photos.

What a wonderful sight – I would have loved to see that. I’ve been to Pismo Beach, in January, but didn’t hear about this place.

We were lucky that Marsha and Vince knew to take us there. It was incredible.

I can’t think of enough good adjectives to describe these photos. What an amazing time you must have had. The closest I’ve ever come was a small butterfly exhibit at Hershey Gardens in Pennsylvania. It was an enclosed large room with butterflies all over the place. We spent a long time in there, and as we left we had to go through an airlock to make sure we didn’t have any hitchhikers. Great photos. 🙂

We went to a similar place at Kuranda in northern Queensland which was amazing too. But to see all these butterflies in their natural environment was another experience altogether. Truly wonderful.

Must have been amazing. I drove through Pismo Beach in February one year, but didn’t know about this place, possibly too late anyway.

You might have been lucky to see a few perhaps.

How wonderful to see! The first I knew of the monarch migration was the novel Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver which I really enjoyed.

I must look it up on our digital library catalogue.
